Green Janitorial Chemicals - 7 Shocking Facts to Consider for Protecting Your Building Occupants

Cleaning yields a clean surface, right? Nope, not necessarily. If you use the traditional, conventional cleaners you may have created an even greater issue. Although the surfaces may be free from dirt and grime, they may not be free from toxins that result from the petrochemical based cleaning products used. It is for this reason that it is so important to ensure only green janitorial chemicals and supplies are used in your facility.

Ever since a 1984 World Health Organization report suggested up to 30 percent of new and remodeled buildings worldwide may be linked to aliments and symptoms of sick building syndrome (SBS), there has is an ever-increasing awareness of what poor indoor air quality can do to building occupants and guests.

There are many more reasons to strive for a safe, green, clean result. Here are seven shocking facts that serve as additional reasons.

Indoor air pollution levels can be 100 times higher than outdoor air pollution levels, according to the EPA estimates!
Fewer than 200 of the 62,000 chemicals available since the Toxic Substance Control Act (TSCA) was passed in 1979 have been tested for chronic impact on human health.
It takes only 26 seconds for a toxic chemical to get into our body! Chemicals enter into our body through inhalation, ingestion and absorption through our largest organ (our skin).
Asthma has increased in the last 20 years over 600 percent. Today, twenty (20) million people in the USA (including 6.1 million children) have asthma. Asthma accounts for more than 14 million outpatient clinic visits and near 2 million energy room visits.
The average person can be exposed 82,000 toxins to in their daily life. (Of the estimated 85,000 chemicals in the U.S. marketplace, only a small fraction of them have ever been tested for their chronic impacts to human health. While Europe has banned 1,100 chemicals from use in products, the U.S. has banned fewer than ten.)
Ever since the flu pandemic a couple of years ago, many different varieties and brands of antimicrobial soaps, cleaners, sanitizers, have been formulated and available. Unfortunately 275 of the ingredients in anti-microbials are classified as pesticides. US EPA classifies these active ingredients as pesticides because they are designed to KILL microbes.
Cancer rates have doubled since 1960. The cancer rate in 1900 was about 1 in 8,000, Today it is about 1 in 2 during a lifetime. Even with treatment many of these cancers are the cause of death.

Cleaning supplies and products are a huge industry. In fact about $14 Billion is spent each YEAR. For example, in a single state (California) it has been estimated that the following has been sold every single day of the year: 34 tons (or 68,000 pounds) of air fresheners; 74,000 tons (147 million pounds) of all-purpose cleaners, 109 tons (or 218,000 pounds) of toilet bowl cleaners, 102 tons (or 204,000 pounds) of glass cleaners (Source: California Air Resources Board). Recapping this is about the same volume as is contained in twenty-four (24) Olympic size swimming pools! If this is the volume of liquid cleaners sold in one state on one day, can you imagine how much is consumed in the entire country (USA)!

As a result of the demands generated by the end users (building owners and facility managers), new formulations ensure green janitorial chemicals and supplies have high efficacy and are becoming more cost-effective all of the time.

Protecting Nature - Ecological Offset Printing

Deinking of Paper - The opportunity to deink the paper - basically, to break ink and coatings from it - is crucial for sustainable recycling of it. Good deinkability is a prerequisite for using used paper to produce graphical papers and hygienic paper products. Effective ways can be found in these days for eliminating aqueous coatings and sheet-fed offset inks.

It is definitely more difficult to achieve good results with UV-cured inks and coatings, the liquid toner used in digital printing, and inkjet inks. Ink taken out of recycled pulp can be burned to generate energy to run the mill, or sold to make such useful substances as compost or gravel for roads. A single piece of paper may have new fibers along with fibers which have already been recycled once, twice, or several times. Paper-making fibers can typically be recycled 5-7 times before they become very short to be recycled again. Successful recycling needs clean recovered paper that's free of pollutants such as food, plastic, metal, and other trash. Contaminated paper can introduce impurities and bacteria into the recycling procedure. Furthermore, different grades of paper - corrugated boxes, newspapers, and office paper - must be kept separate, because the different grades of recovered paper are used to create specialized types of recycled paper products.

Eco Inks and Coatings - A few of the pigments used in ink contain metallic compounds which are harmful to human health and the environment such as cadmium, chromium, lead and mercury. Standard printing inks are petroleum-based and used with alcohol-based solvents. As alcohol and petroleum evaporate Volatile Organic Compounds are emitted.Volatile Organic Compounds represent ecological pollution and a health hazard to press-room employees. In terms of atmospheric pollution, Volatile Organic Compounds react with nitrogen oxides in the existence of daylight to create ozone pollution or photochemical smog. Offset inks generally consist to 30 % of mineral oils. Using Eco-inks, also known as Eco-solvent inks and green inks, can cut down at the consumption of fossil fuels. These products use transformed vegetable oils instead, such as linseed or soy esters.

Eco-inks are already widely used in some markets. The variation in reproduction quality and processing are hardly clear. All major European producers are involved in the voluntary commitment made by the EU ink industry to defending health and ensuring product safety. Soy and vegetable based inks also benefit the environment due to better ease of removal from wastepaper during de-inking for recycling. Also with UV inks a few producers have succeeded in changing up to 30% of the substances that go into their formulations with renewable raw materials. From an ecological viewpoint, in connection with packaging it is relevant that only extremely little amounts of offset printing inks constituents migrate from the printed surface into the substrate. Print coatings may also be regarded as inks who don't have pigments. Like Eco-inks, it is therefore also easy to use vegetable oil derivatives instead of mineral oils to create them. Dispersion and UV coatings are considerably less conducive to substituting renewable raw materials.

Risky Chemicals in the Environment and Protecting Yourself

Risky chemicals in the environment have increased drastically in the last couple of years. Some of these are due to human influence while others are brought about by natural causes. Regardless of the factors leading to this state, the impact has been devastating not only to humans but animals alike.

Some of these chemicals come from either industrial or agricultural activities. There are some which are designed to carry out functions like healing animals or killing pesticides. Additionally, others are designed as structural materials used to enhance various applications. While these chemicals come in handy for enhancing life, they are also known to cause grievous harm. Considering this fact, it is in order to state that the arm far outweighs the benefits.

Risky chemicals get to the environment as emissions and in other instances, they do so through water. For instance, when nitrogen and sulfur oxide from vehicles and industrial wastage are omitted and combine with the other gases in the atmosphere, they are responsible for causing acidic rain. This in turn poisons rivers and water bodies. It is for this reason that there is an influx in death of aquatic animals. At the end of the day, this also affects land by lowering its productivity.

Risky chemicals in the environment are also responsible for affecting chains of interconnected ecosystems and eventually this leads to extinction of certain species. Due to all these factors, it is important to ensure that you are well protected from the effects associated with these chemicals. The air people breathe, food they eat and the water they drink is ingested with these risky chemicals and for this reason, it is always considered important to ensure that caution is exercises.

No place is safe since the indoors and outdoors are all affected. You could start protecting yourself from risky chemicals in the environment by ensuring that you don't live in areas close to chemical processing plants. While you might thinks this is an inconvenience, it will go a long way to increase your chances of enjoy good health. According to research, it is estimated that at least 80% of all cancer cases are brought about by such risky chemicals. Other risk factors include kidney disorders, heart disease, liver disease, anemia and emphysema among others.

Even the personal things people use such as hair sprays, strong cleaners, varnish, paint and tarnish are known to contain risky chemicals. At the end of the day, this reinforces the belief that no one is actually safe from the risky chemicals in the environment. As the rate of pollution continues to increase, more and more people are suffering from all the effects stated earlier and it is precisely due to this fact that it is deemed important to find a solution quickly.

If something is not done about the risky chemicals in the environment, it will be only a matter of time before there is an increased reportage of more sick people. Fortunately, there are some measures which are been put into place to ensure that this never happens. With luck, it should be easy for this end to be met.
